Summary

Simply put, Videojournalism is visual storytelling. Using a camera, microphone and editing on a laptop to present honest, concise, meaningful stories that both educate and inform the audience.

With the converging of media online and the morphing of journalism into social media, those who wish to enter the once staid profession of journalism must be prepared for anything…and this means arming yourself with a wide variety of skills.

Visual media is a extremely important part of this new landscape.

Check here for updates on the progress of this textbook, The Basics of Videojournalism.

Note: The concept of this book began as a workbook used in workshops we conducted in the late 1990s. The Digital Revolution (as it was called) had just begun and people were clamoring for expert information on how to use their new camcorders and editing programs. These workbook mini-lessons were refined and used as part of high school broadcasting classes when Cyndy became a teacher. The book is finally in its final stages of re-writing. A lot has happened since we first began…and much of the rewriting is an attempt to keep up with the pace of technology, although much of the book will teach a process rather than specific technology.

Update February 1, 2012
Final writing is proceeding on the book as we tweak chapters to contain the latest technology. Final edit projected for late summer/early spring of this year – then the visualizations begin. Photographs and video examples for both the book and anticipated DVD or online videos.
